Handing Company Work to a Freelance Designer

About 2 minutes to read
When handing work to a freelance designer, prepare the company's information and decision flow as well. External capacity does not automatically repair an unclear approval process.
Define what is being handed over
Describe outputs, usage contexts and required inputs. State separately whether copywriting, research or supplier coordination is expected. The word design should not hide several unrelated responsibilities. Distinguish a single assignment from a recurring support need before choosing a working arrangement.
Nominate a decision owner
One person should consolidate and prioritise comments. That person need not know every technical detail, but should obtain specialist checks and resolve contradictory requests. Different final decisions arriving through different channels can create avoidable revisions and waiting. Keep the approved version in a shared record.
Check the starting package
Prepare identity assets, approved copy, image rights information and production specifications. Mark missing inputs with an owner and expected date. Evaluate the schedule against these dependencies. Do not ask a designer to invent product claims that only the company can verify.
Request a useful handover note
Include the file structure, dependencies and unresolved decisions in the final delivery. A future contributor should not need to rediscover everything. If requests become recurring, evaluate monthly design support through continuity and internal decision ownership as well as production capacity.
